Description:
The Policy and Communication Evaluation (PACE) Vermont Study is a partnership between the University of Vermont and the Vermont Department of Health to understand the impact of state-level policies and communication campaigns on substance use beliefs and behaviors in young Vermonters ages 12-25. Consisting of 9 online surveys from March 2019 to December 2021, the goal was to capture time-sensitive changes in perceptions and patterns associated with tobacco, e-cigarette and other substance use to guide state level efforts in education and prevention. In line with this time sensitive mechanism, we added items on COVID-related experiences, distress, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on substance use during survey waves 4-9 (Sept 2020-Dec 2021), which covered the 2020-2021 school year and the release of the vaccine. The aims of these additional questions were to: 1) assess changes in mental health symptoms and substance use during the COVID-19 pandemic in teens and young adults, and 2) describe the impact of COVID-related distress (i.e., school closures, food insecurity, social isolation, family loss) on mental health symptoms and substance use over time.
